Day 73

Wednesday 17th of March 2010 at 23:26

By the time you read this I should have crossed the 1000 mile to go point. Hurray! Slowly but surely getting there. Today has been another good day for progress. Also saw another whale today. However yesterday it was nearly game over for me. The pump head on my water maker failed. Meaning I could not make fresh water. I came in from my morning shift on the oars and turned the water maker on. Straight away I noticed something didn't sound quite right. Within a few seconds I realized what the problem was. Basically no water was being pumped through the system. It was very hot at this time of day so I decided to fix it later that evening. Luckily I had a spare pump head. What was to come was a real pain. It should of taken around 45 mins to an hour to swap out. Oh no that would have been far to easy! Every screw I needed to undo was either seized or spinning the bolt when I turned the nut. I had to strip away an entire panel that was fitted with electrics to get to what I needed to. Over 4 hours later I had managed to fix it and get the water maker working again. What a pain! Nothing is easy on an ocean rowing boat bobbing up and down.

There is some big weather forecasted for the next 4 days that should speed speedo up a little. Well hopefully anyway.

For those that haven't sponsored me yet, if you could that would be mega appreciated by me and the children who need it. www.justgivving.com/jamesketchell many thanks in advance and thanks to those who have.

Out for now from captain Ketch on the good ship Speedo.

Nearly 1000miles to go! Well done. Also the winds seem to be good ones over the next few days so you should be able to surf along and before you know it you will be nearly there! Well done for mending the watermaker. That is what ocean rowing is all about - endurance and perseverance in difficult times. Keep an eye on your food rations, keep safe and enjoy it all while you can!
