The RYA Survival Course

Sunday 25th of January 2009 at 15:33

The RYA Survival Course On Sunday 25th and Saturday the 31st of January I participated in a sea survival and first aid at sea course. The course covered numerous subjects, Life rafts, how to use them correctly. Believe it or not there is a lot more to just throwing it in the water and jumping in it. Flares, what the different colours stand for and what situations you would use them in. What surprised me was how poor some of the instructions were. With different types if you wasn't careful you'll find you could quite easily fire them off the wrong way. Life jackets, how they work and what to look for when choosing one.

The Saturday mostly consisted of first aid. I've lost count how many times I've resuscitated a dummy now! Not sure who will do it for me though, seen as I'm rowing solo, but never the less it was still useful.

For me the most useful part of the course was looking at all the different safety equipment and how it actually works. I will certainly make sure I know how to use all my kit before I depart. Trying to read the instructions on a life raft is probably not a good idea when you're trying to deploy it. All in all a very good course.

Slowly but surely I'm ticking things off my to do list.
