My first training session down at Woodvale near Plymouth
My alarm goes off at 7am and I get straight up. Once I'm showered and ready to go I head off for some breakfast. Before long 9 o'clock roles up and I meet up with Woodvale and some of the other ocean rowers at Queen Anne's Battery marina. Woodvale had organised seven boats for everyone to take out and spend a day rowing in. Myself and three others went out in Silver Cloud which was rowed across earlier this year by four girls and made a very respectable crossing of just over 70 days. To begin with we all rowed out as a group aiming for HMS Illustrious which was moored just by the Plymouth break water. We rowed round Illustrious and came back in. Once everyone had made it back we all gathered just out side of the marina docking area. The Woodvale race organisers then blew the klaxon and the race was on! We raced to the break water wall and back again. Taking it in shifts to row. Whist changing over it soon became apparent that making changeovers and generally moving about on the boat wasn't that easy. I nearly came close to coming out on a few occasions whilst moving around. By the time we made it back I think we were about the 5th team to make it back in. All in all we were out on the water for a good 4-5 hours.
Once we got all the boat's back in and moored up we hit the beverages, and just generally chatted about the day amongst ourselves. Three pints later I find myself in a taxi heading into Plymouth town centre. All I can remember after that was waking up on Sunday not felling to good. It was worth it though as it was a great weekend and I got a lot out of it.
